Case Study: KINGSPAN BUILDING PRODUCTS

Since 1996 Kingspan Building products have been relying on fully computerised systems developed by Synectic Design Ltd.  A computerised system that accurately measure and blend the complex recipes of chemicals which makes up the foam filling in their award winning products.  Sites at Holywell and Sherburn near Scarborough have been operating day and night with a system that Kingspans own polymer engineers had a hand in specifying.  What they liked about the first system installed in Holywell back in 1996 was the robustness of the system.  Synectic instruments are controlled by a PC which stores all of the recipes and logs the history of all batches that it blends.  On screen graphics show representations of tank contents indicate pumps and valve status and enable measuring mixing blending and movement between one storage vessel and another.  The difference between the Synectic system and the offerings of most other process control systems is the fact that it is not reliant on PLCs.  Belts and braces they called it.  If the PC develops a problem  the controllers can be used as stand alone instruments to accurately weigh all of the ingredients.   They had tried other systems in their other factories but when they bought Wards in Sherburn they chose to go with Synectic again.
